Two Early Stage East 2008 Presenting Companies Get Funded! |
Maverick Network Solutions is poised for an aggressive expansion plan that includes quadrupling its workforce from 5 to 20 by the end of 2009. This was triggered by a first-round venture-capital investment of $1.5 million in late 2008, led by Innovation Ventures, LP, with offices in Wilmington, DE and Lancaster, PA and Emerald Stage2 Ventures. The other participants in this round of financing were Robin Hood Ventures, Trestle Ventures and The Delaware Economic Development Office, that contributed $500,000 to the investment round through its emerging technologies pre-venture fund, which targets startups with rapid growth potential. As a result of this financing, David J. Freschman of Innovation Ventures and Saul Richter of Emerald Stage2 Ventures have joined the Board of Directors. Maverick provides advanced payment solutions including private label debit cards, prepaid corporate gift cards and employee incentive cards to corporations that help reduce costs and increase revenues. Maverick provides corporate clients with access to the national bank card networks and is a certified Level I PCI –DSS card processor, ensuring the highest level of security for corporations and consumers. “Maverick is extremely pleased to be receiving this capital injection”, said Jim Shanahan, founder and CEO. “The fact that our payment products are designed to help companies reduce costs and increase efficiencies is definitely a plus in these difficult economic times.” Shanahan, one of four payment industry veterans who started Maverick in 2006, said the company is looking to take advantage of developments in the industry that have expanded access to card networks and allowed for new types of payment technologies. |
"We think it's a real game changer to be able to offer consumers an alternative debit card through the merchants," he said. “The market opportunity for prepaid cards is enormous as companies continue to find new uses for prepaid cards. Delaware is well positioned to dominate prepaid card industry just as it did the credit card industry. We look forward to working with Maverick as it continues to grow,” said David Freschman, Managing Principal of Innovation Ventures. New York-based internet video start-up company, Magnify.net, also announced on November 25, 2008 that it had raised $750,000. The round of funding was led by Innovation Ventures, LP with participation from previous investors, RoseTech Ventures, NextStage Capital and Ogden Capital. This comes after the company secured a $1.2m seed funding round in February 2007. David J. Freschman of Innovation Ventures will join the Magnify.net Board of Directors. The company provides a video publishing platform, and allows website publishers establish video channels for their sites. Magnify’s clients include Taste of Home Magazine, which uses Magnify to power its Web video site. All told, almost 47,000 sites use Magnify. We think that being able to find, curate, |
and present video from multiple sources is a powerful new way to increase page views and therefore revenue." Magnify.net offers three tiers of service on their video platform: free, professional and enterprise-level service. Magnify self-reports 46,000 web publishers using their video platform. In September, 2008 Magnify launched their MVP video player. Magnify.net has about ten employees and aims to be cash flow break-even next year on about $1 million of revenue.
