Juniper Bank Building and Kalmar Nyckel Tall Ship
6:30 p.m. - Monday, June 17, 2002

The Juniper Bank building and the Kalmar Nyckel tall ship provide Early Stage East with a dynamic and fascinating location for the opening of this year's conference.

About The Juniper Bank Building

Photo of Juniper Bank - interiorJuniper Bank, located on the Wilmington Riverfront, artistically joins the industrial age with the technological age. Once the former boiler production plant of the Harlan & Hollingsworth Corporation ship building company, the space now blends cutting-edge technology with the creative use of industrial materials within the raw shell of brick, steel and concrete. The earth tone finishes, Plexiglas wall systems, exposed concrete block and contemporary furnishings lend Juniper a unique environment for their corporate culture and provide us with an extraordinary venue for our opening gala reception.

About The Kalmar Nyckel

The Kalmar Nyckel, a Swedish-owned, Dutch-built three-masted armed pinnace (warship), will be on hand at our Opening Ceremonies with on-board tours and refreshments available. A focal point for tourism and historical education, The Kalmar Nyckel is a fully functional sail training vessel and has represented Delaware at festivals from Virginia to New York. In 1986 the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation was established to create a replica of the Kalmar Nyckel. Photo of Kalmar Nyckel Tall ShipThe new Kalmar Nyckel was launched on September 28, 1997. The original ship brought the first permanent European settlers to the Delaware Valley, sailing from Goteborg, Sweden in November of 1637. She landed on the banks of the Christina River, a tributary of the mighty Delaware River. The original Kalmar Nyckel made four documented round-trip crossings of the Atlantic, more than any other "settlers' ship" of the era. The original ship was lost in the late 1600's.
